The following positions are currently open at the Fairbanks House
The oldest timber-frame house in North America, the Fairbanks House Museum, is seeking to hire an Executive Director who will be responsible for managing the business, administrative, marketing, membership, and fundraising operations of the 501c (3) organization with support from the Board of Directors and volunteer committees.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, history, non-profit management or a related field; advanced degree preferred
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in museum management or a related field, with demonstrated success in leadership, project management, fundraising and strategic planning; experience with 501c (3) non-profit organizations preferred
- Strong knowledge of museum operations, including collection management, exhibition planning and educational programming
- Experience in managing financials, including budgeting and reporting
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and public speaking skills
- Proven ability to build and maintain relationships both with organizational membership and the public
- Experience in marketing, outreach and event planning
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a dynamic and evolving work
- environment

Salary:
This is a full-time, year-round position, with flexible hours and an opportunity for some remote work and travel. Annual salary is between $65000-$70000, commensurate with qualifications and prior experience.

The Fairbanks House Museum in Dedham, MA, listed on The National Register of Historic Places, is currently seeking volunteer docents for its open season, May-October 2025. Built in 1637, it is the oldest wood-timber house in North America. In 1902, the house became a museum and continues today as an important example of American history and architecture.
Ideal docent candidates will have:
- education and/or experience in a museum setting
- excellent communication skills
- comfort interacting with small groups of visitors and staff of all ages and backgrounds
- ability to be in an environment of small rooms without climate control
- willingness to learn and use two software platforms for ticket processing and museum shop purchases
- enthusiasm and respect for history
Candidates are asked to commit to a minimum of two hours per week or eight hours per month and honor that commitment throughout the open season of May through October.
Orientation/training sessions for accepted docents will be held to provide our visitors with a guided and memorable experience visiting the museum.

Welcoming visitors to the museum is the primary purpose of a greeter. Though tours will be given by a docent, the greeter will introduce themselves to visitors, check-in guests who have pre-bought admissions, issue tickets as needed, process shop purchases and otherwise assist docents as needed.
While no prior formal training is required, the successful tour greeter candidate will:
- have excellent communication skills
- be comfortable interacting with small groups of visitors and staff of all ages and diversity
- possess ability to be in an environment of small rooms without climate control
- be willing to learn and use two software platforms for ticket processing and museum shop purchases
- possess enthusiasm and respect for history
