July 1, 2017
  • Curator Talk: Servants, Orphans, and Transients

    1:30 pm - 2:30 pm

Who lived in the Fairbanks house? Aside from eight generations of Fairbanks a number of other people spent time in the house over the years. For many years the Fairbanks were wealthy enough that they could afford servants, but they also took in local children whose parents had passed or were otherwise unable to look after them. Additionally, there was a Puritan practice of taking in transients, the poor, and other unfortunates. Meet the many people, from all walks of life, who lived with the Fairbanks Family.
This event is free, but space is limited, reservations are recommended.

  • Curator Talk: Faith and Folklore

    1:30 pm - 2:30 pm

What did the Fairbanks family believe? The early Fairbanks were slow to join the local church but once they did they became pillars of Dedham’s religious community. However, they also practiced a number of folk rituals to protect the house. The homestead has a number of “Hex Marks” carved into doorways and around the chimney. These marks were meant to protect the house from evil spirits and witches. Folk magic like this was common and not seen as counter to Christian beliefs. Find out how the Fairbanks family reconciled these ideas and how they changed over the years.
This even is free but space is limited and reservations are recommended.
